Brush sweeping leaves and twigs off an artificial grass lawn.

Having artificial grass installed in your garden is a whole lot easier to maintain than a natural lawn. However, it doesn't come maintenance-free and as long as you are keeping on top of the build-up of dirt, down-trodden or frequently used areas or your pet's favourite toilet spot, you can keep your garden lawn looking fabulous and smelling great.

Garden Tips To Keep Your Artificial Grass in Great Shape

Here are some tips that will help you along the way and give you that pristine garden view you always hoped for.

1. Clearing Garden Debris

Our customer's sometimes ask us if they can vacuum clean their artificial grass. Although, this is possible in small spot areas and only when your lawn is near to immaculate in its cleanliness, vacuuming can damage the look and performance grass in the long run.

The first step in giving your lawn a general clean is to clear the loose fragments such as petals, leaves and twigs. The most efficient way of doing this is getting a leaf blower but failing that, there is nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned broom and rake. Gather the debris into a corner of your garden, pick up the larger pieces, sweep up the finer dust and dirt using a dust pan and brush and dispose into your garden waste bin.

2. Hosing Your Turf

Hosing down your turf with water will keep it looking fresh as well as ridding it of small spills and odours. After hosing, keep the grass pile pointing upwards by brushing with a broom or rake.

Following sections 1 and 2 regularly will help preserve your lawn and have it looking fresh.

3. Preventing Weeds and Moss

Artificial grass highly reduces the cultivation of weeds on your lawn and it is very difficult for weeds to grow through especially through a properly installed turf. However, it is still possible for surface weeds to sometimes grow around the edges and, although very rare, through the small holes in the backing material – but again, extremely unlikely.

Should you come across weeds, a generic weed killer can be used. However, we recommend not to walk on the lawn for 2-3 days after being sprayed with weed killer then hosing down to rinse any chemicals away.

4. Cleaning Pet and Animal Waste

'When you gotta go, you gotta go!' This old adage also applies to pets and wild animals whether it's their regular yard break or they're just passing through. Our artificial grass for dogs works perfectly for your furry friend.

One of our popular questions we are asked is, “What is the best way to clean my garden of my pet's wee and poop?”. We advise to clean it up as you normally would and then wash away any excess with a watering can or hose. To ensure the turf stays fresh and clean, any waste should be removed as soon as possible, before simply rinsing the area with water.

Over time, the infected areas may become significantly odorous and difficult to ignore. There are a number of artificial grass turf disinfectants and deodorisers that will help your lawn smelling fresh.

However, if you prefer not to use a chemical turf disinfectant on your lawn, a 50/50 water vinegar solution will kill bacteria and allow your pets to go back onto the lawn immediately.

5.  Clearing Drink Spills

During the summer months, barbeques, outdoor parties and drinks spillages are unavoidable. Liquids such as beer, wine, juices or soft drinks are not a major problem. Simply, blot the spillage with kitchen towel and hose off using cold water. If the spill is a sticky and stubborn one, try using warm soapy water.

6. Managing Paint Spills

Paint spills should be attended immediately after they happen. Clean the area as you would when cleaning paint brushes. Water-based paints should be removed with water and oil-based paints with turpentine.

7. Clearing Oil Stains

Oils can be removed with a mild degreaser without causing damage to your artificial grass. However, do not use cleaners containing acid as this likely to be hazardous and damaging to your lawn.

8. Removing Chewing Gum

Chewing gum can get more difficult to shift the longer it has been embedded into your lawn. The first line of attack is to use ice to freeze that gum as much as possible. This will harden the gum and will assist in scraping it away.

You may have to do this several times before you can dislodge the gum but do be careful to scrape upwards in line with the grass blades not across. This will avoid you cutting the grass blades and damaging the pile.

Should paint spills or oil stains become unresolved, it is possible to repair the afflicted area by cutting it out and re-patching.
