Laying artificial grass on concrete is one of the easiest ways to turn a hard outdoor surface into a soft green space. With the right preparation your new lawn will look natural, feel comfortable underfoot and drain correctly. Follow this step by step guide to achieve a professional finish.
Prepare the Concrete Surface
Start by giving the concrete a thorough clean. Remove dirt, moss, loose stones and any uneven areas. A smooth and stable base helps the grass sit flat and prevents bumps from showing through. If the concrete has large cracks fill them with exterior filler and let them dry fully.
Check Drainage
Artificial grass needs water to drain away. Pour a small amount of water over the surface to see how quickly it moves. If puddles form you may need to drill small drainage holes or add a slight slope using an outdoor self levelling compound.
Add an Underlay
Underlay creates softness underfoot and makes the final finish look more natural. It also helps even out minor imperfections in the concrete. Cut the underlay to size and lay it across the whole area.
Roll Out the Artificial Grass
Unroll the turf and allow it to settle so the fibres can relax. Make sure the pile direction runs the same way across the entire surface. Trim any excess using a sharp knife so it fits neatly around edges and corners.
Secure the Edges
Use strong outdoor adhesive to fix the grass to the concrete around the perimeter. Apply the glue in small sections to keep everything aligned. Press the grass firmly into place as you go.
Join Multiple Pieces
If your space needs more than one roll join the pieces with joining tape and adhesive. Place the tape under the seam, add adhesive and press both edges together. Adjust gently until the join looks seamless.
Brush and Finish
Once everything is secure brush the grass against the pile to lift the fibres. This gives the lawn a fuller and more natural appearance. Check that all edges are fixed and that no areas lift when walked on.
Final Touch
Your artificial lawn is now ready to enjoy. With careful preparation and the right installation steps even a plain concrete space can be transformed with artificial grass into a soft evergreen area that is comfortable and low maintenance.
